Review:
Eve caught her latest case when she was out having a drink with a colleague and a woman literally staggered out of the ladies room and bled out on the floor at Eve's feet. Lucinda Mars was a well known journalist who loved to dig up the latest celebrity gossip so as you can imagine she has plenty of enemies for Eve to try and eliminate from her enquiries, and that was before Eve discovered that Mars had a nasty habit of blackmailing people for a mixture of cash or other people's secrets. The deeper Eve digs the more she wishes Mars was still alive so she could be thrown in a cage just like she deserved but no matter how despicable Mars was she didn't deserve to die and Eve will bring her killer to justice.
It's always interesting to see Eve work a case for a victim she doesn't like, she has such a strong moral code that even when the victim brought their death upon themselves she will stand up and get justice for them. This case throws up some surprising emotions from Eve though, partly about her own past but also to do with her relationship with Summerset which I found really interesting. We actually get a huge revelation about him in this book and I loved the way Eve and Roarke handled it. I absolutely love Roarke, he and Eve are right up there as one of my favourite fiction couples ever and their relationship is totally swoonworthy.
All my favourite side characters put in an appearance and as usual there are some fun scenes with Eve and Peabody. I'd actually like a bit more of Peabody and McNab (wouldn't it be amazing to get a book or two that focused mainly on them!) but I'm happy with where they're both at. The mystery side was more slow build in this book but it was nice to see Eve not quite as stressed as she often ends up getting mid case. There weren't multiple bodies piling up so there was less urgency in tracking down the killer, of course you know all along that Eve will catch her target but she's not racing against time trying to save other potential victims.
I'm still totally hooked on this series and ready to dive straight into the next book!

Review: Echoes in Death - J.D. Robb
New York at night. A young woman stumbles out on to a busy street - right in front of Lieutenant Eve Dallas and husband Roarke. Her name is Daphne Strazza, and she has been brutally assaulted. Confused and traumatised, she manages to tell them one thing. Her attacker wore a devil's mask.
As Eve investigates this shocking case, she soon discovers a disturbing pattern. Someone is preying on wealthy couples, subjecting them to a cruel and terrifying ordeal. Worse still, the attacks are escalating in violence and depraved theatricality. Eve and her team are now in a race against time to find the man behind the mask - before he strikes again. But for Eve, this case in particular has unsettling echoes of her own troubled past...

Review:
I really am starting to run out of things to say about the In Death series but to anyone who has been watching me binge read these books over the last few months I think it's fairly obvious that I'm totally obsessed with this world and the characters J.D. Robb has created. I put off starting these books for a ridiculously long time because I was intimated by the length of the series and now that I'm so close to being caught up I find myself disappointed that there aren't already 100 books published instead of a mere 50!
Anyway, Echoes in Death starts with a half naked woman, one who has been beaten and is covered in blood, stumbling out into the road right in front of Roarke's car. Eve and Roarke immediately step in and take the woman to hospital but she's so traumatised that she's unable to explain what happened other than to say she was attacked my a devil. When Eve checks the woman's home she discovers the body of her husband who has obviously been tortured and beaten to death. As she starts investigating she discovers a link to a string of home break ins targeting wealthy couples, the previous victims were all brutalised and suffered a terrifying ordeal but this is the first time it ended in murder and Eve knows that now the killer has the taste for it their crimes are only going to continue getting worse.
Murder is always a difficult thing to read about but this case hits closer to home for Eve than others because the female victims were all repeatedly raped during their ordeals. This brings up a lot of Eve's past and makes her more invested in the case than usual but she is also extremely good at working with the victims and making sure they are treated sensitively. The case was definitely an uncomfortable one to read about and I did find myself picking out the murderer very early on but I still enjoyed watching Eve and her team putting the clues together. I'm far more invested in this series for the characters than for the murder mysteries anyway and there were a few absolutely heart melting moments between Eve and Roarke in this instalment. I'm still as hooked as ever and I've already started reading the next book!

Review:
I've made quite a few of these Incredibuilds Harry Potter models now and I've always been happy with the results. They've all been pretty easy to put together, the hardest part tends to be getting the pieces out of the board they come on without breaking them but as long as you take your time you should have no problem with that either. This model of Hedwig is one of my favourites, Hedwig is super cute and the broom she's holding (a Nimbus 2000!) is just tucked gently in between her claws so is completely removable.
The booklet it comes with has all sorts of fun facts about the pets in the Harry Potter movies, everyone from Hedwig (obviously!), Scabbers and Crookshanks through to Trevor, Mrs Norris, Fang, Fluffy, Nagini and even Fawkes get their own page describing how the team brought their characters to life with a mixture of real animals, animatronics and CGI.
These models make great shelf decorations and are sure to be a hit with Potterheads of all ages.

Review: Fragmented Loyalty - Tonya Burrows
All I want is to leave my past of criminal hacking behind. Oh, and ditch the blackmailer who has been dogging my every move for the last three years.
The plan: Hack my way into being part of Class Alpha, a training program for a secretive organization that rescues hostages the government can’t or won’t go after. Save the world and make enough money to pay back my blackmailer—solves all my problems, right?
The complication: Sweet, nerdy, and unbearably sexy Eric “Harvard” Physick. Harvard is my ideal man, but he’s also my instructor. Seriously a no-go, except we can’t seem to keep our hands off each other.
My blackmailer isn’t willing to let me off the hook, though, and a series of freak accidents—deadly accidents—sends Class Alpha into a tailspin. And the more I get to know Harvard, I start to realize his past is just as troubled as mine.
Am I the cause of this chaos...or is he?

Review:
It's been a couple of years since Tonya Burrows published the last book in the Hornet series but I was always hoping we'd get a book for Harvard so I was really happy when I found out about this new spin off series Hornet: Class Alpha, starting with Fragmented Loyalty. Although this series is focusing on the team Hornet have been training Harvard is a member of the original group and you'll see a lot of familiar faces from the previous books showing up as teachers and mentors. I think you could probably start with this book but you'll definitely have a much fuller reading experience if you read the original series first.
Harvard is Hornet's tech wiz and he's been instrumental in many of the team's rescue missions thanks to his surveillance skills and the backup support he's offered. He's an expert hacker and a total nerd, also really sweet and very protective of his team. All Harvard has ever wanted is to find a place to belong, as a child genius who graduated school far earlier than most he never really fitted in with his peers and with a vindictive alcoholic mother he never had much support at home either. The Hornet team have become his family and what he wants more than anything is to prove himself to them.
Sami is also a hacker extraordinaire but one who got caught up with a bad group and crossed some lines as a child and was sent to juvie at the age of 14. Her family disowned her after she was released so she was left completely alone at 18 with nothing and nobody. She made the mistake of agreeing to a favour to a mystery benefactor in exchange for the money she needed to survive and three years later she's still waiting for the hammer to drop. Being accepted into Hornet's training program was a chance for Sami to turn her life around, she wants to make something of her life but when her benefactor finally calls in their favour things go downhill fast.
I was so happy to be back in this world, as far as the series timeline goes not much time has passed, in fact some of this book touches on previous events just from a different perspective, but in reality it's been a while and I enjoyed catching up with the characters. I worried for a minute that I wouldn't remember everyone but it all seemed to fall back into place very quickly. Harvard and Sami are both great characters, I loved the geeky banter between them as they fan out on things like Star Wars and Game of Thrones and it was very easy to imagine being friends with them. They have a lot in common and they had wonderful chemistry but I did find it a little frustrating that neither of them opened up about their secrets a little sooner. It worked for the story but put a bit of a downer on their budding romance. It wasn't too hard to look past that though and I was totally rooting for them to work it all out.
The story has everything I'd expect from a Hornet novel, great romance, lots of intrigue and a nice amount of action. I'm enjoying getting to know the rest of the Alpha Class and I'm very happy that Wolfe's book is up next.

room. I’d been so caught up in fantasizing about Harvard, I’d completely missed the last ten minutes of the lesson.
Even worse, it had been obvious enough that Wolfe felt he had to intervene. Excuse me while I melt into a puddle of red-hot embarrassment.
My only saving grace was that Harvard hadn’t noticed.
Everyone else had, and I’d get major flak from all of the guys later, but Harvard had been too absorbed in the lesson. Yay for hyper-focused nerd boys!
“Hey,” Wolfe whispered and nudged me again. He pretended to wipe drool from his mouth. “You got a little something…”
I shot him the bird. “Keep it up, Wolfey. I’ll send your browser history to your mother.”
“Go ahead.” He flashed a grin. “I erased everything incriminating.”
Thoroughly amused, I raised a brow. “You think I can’t find erased data? Oh, you poor, naive luddite.”
His grin dropped away.
I returned my attention to the front of the room, but by that point, the lesson was completely lost on me. I was just biding time until class ended—but then I noticed Jean-Luc had stopped speaking. The room had gone completely silent, save for an evil villain laugh that started soft and grew in volume.
I looked up at the whiteboard. The projection screen had gone black. An 8-bit video game character with blinking red eyes filled the screen. Underneath it flashed the words
LET’S START THE GAME.

Review: Apprentice in Death - J.D. Robb
Nature versus nurture...
The shots came quickly, silently, and with deadly accuracy. Within seconds, three people were dead at Central Park's ice skating rink. The victims: a talented young skater, a doctor, and a teacher. As random as random can be.
Eve Dallas has seen a lot of killers during her time with the NYPSD, but never one like this. After reviewing security videos, it becomes clear that the victims were killed by a sniper firing a tactical laser rifle, who could have been miles away when the trigger was pulled. And though the locations where the shooter could have set up seem endless, the list of people with that particular skill set is finite: police, military, professional killer.
Eve's husband, Roarke, has unlimited resources - and genius - at his disposal. And when his computer program leads Eve to the location of the sniper, she learns a shocking fact: There were two-one older, one younger. Someone is being trained by an expert in the science of killing, and they have an agenda. Central Park was just a warm-up. And as another sniper attack shakes the city to its core, Eve realizes that though we're all shaped by the people around us, there are those who are just born evil...

Review:
When Eve is called to a mass shooting event at the Ice Rink in Central Park she quickly realises they have an expert sniper in the city. With no apparent link between the 3 victims she's at a distinct disadvantage trying to figure out whether it was a targeted hit or someone shooting random victims just for the fun of it. As further incidents follow and people in the city start to panic it's up to Eve and her team to try and track down the murderer before they can take any more innocent lives. There is very little that shocks Eve these days but when they figure out the identity of the shooter she realises that evil can still come in unexpected packages. Unfortunately knowing the killer's identity is only half the battle and actually finding them and bringing them to justice is a whole other challenge.
You'd think by book 43 that I might be starting to get tired of this series but that couldn't be further from the case. I'm still hopelessly addicted to these books and I love seeing how much the characters have all changed from the beginning of the series. Of course Eve and Roarke are their awesome selves but Peabody, McNab, Feeny, Baxter, Trueheart and so many others continue to come into their own more with every book.
The murderer in this book was one of the creepiest we've had in a while, I can't really say why because I don't want to spoil it but they were a true psychopath and definitely someone you're glad to see Eve send to prison for the rest of their miserable life. This was another great instalment to the series and I can't wait to carry on reading about Eve's adventures.

Review: The Bear's Forever Mate - Vivian Arend
HE’S GOT THE PERFECT MATE IN MIND, FOR FIVE YEARS FROM NOW...
Cooper Borealis is fully on board with the concept of fated mates. Except mating the woman he wants—his tempting, complicated, human secretary—is not an option. Or not yet anyway. So he’ll use a loophole to keep the vow he made to his brothers, mating fever be damned. He’ll be with Amber Myawayan at the place and time of his choosing.
Amber has spent the past two years in the north looking for her missing brother—and falling in love with the big, growly polar bear at the helm of Borealis Gems. More than once, she’s caught him looking at her with hungry shifter eyes. But getting him to admit it? Ha! Luckily, mating fever is a thing, and she’s happy to get involved as nature forces the issue to the forefront.
But when their mating bond is unexpectedly blocked, Amber and Cooper find themselves in a race against time. She needs to track down her brother while somehow proving she’s tough enough to be with her favourite bear. And Cooper plans to protect her at all costs, even if it means secretly stifling his stubborn shifter side.
Somewhere in the wilderness, they’ll find the answer…or lose their chance at forever.

Review:
In this third, and final, book in the Borealis Bears Trilogy Grandfather Giles turns his attention to his oldest grandson. Cooper already has his mate picked out, he just doesn't think the timing is right to settle down and start a family. Cooper is already courting Amber but in his own, very slow, way because she's a human who only recently found out about the existence of shifters and he's hoping that as she starts to trust him she'll eventually develop stronger feelings. What he doesn't realise is that Amber already wants him and when the two end up stranded together in the wilderness it might just be the push they needed.
I've been really looking forward to Cooper and Amber's story. I've loved all of the brothers but Cooper has always been a bit of a mystery figure but he's one who obviously cares about his family and looks out for his younger brothers. It turns out that both Cooper and his inner bear are very stubborn and although they've both chosen Amber neither of them are keen to start the mating dance any time soon.
Amber has two goals, one is to find her missing brother and the other is to win Cooper's heart. When the chance comes along to achieve the first she's thrilled when Cooper volunteers to join her on her journey into the wilderness. Amber will do whatever it takes to convince Cooper she's ready for the mating but if she doesn't work quickly they may both run out of time.
This was a brilliant end to the trilogy, Grandfather Giles may be a meddling old man but it's been clear from the start that he has his grandson's best interests at heart and it looks like he isn't the only family member who is capable of setting long term plans in motion. It's been great to see all three couples find happiness and I can't help hoping that we may see further books set in this world that give us the chance to catch up with them all a few years down the line.

Review: Magical Midlife Madness - K.F. Breene
A Paranormal Women's Fiction novel with a bit of class, and a lot of sass, for anyone who feels like age is just a number!
"Happily Ever After" wasn't supposed to come with a do-over option. But when my husband of twenty years packs up and heads for greener pastures and my son leaves for college, that's exactly what my life becomes.
Do-over.
This time, though, I plan to do things differently. Age is just a number, after all, and at forty I'm ready to carve my own path.
Eager for a fresh start, I make a somewhat unorthodox decision and move to a tiny town in the Sierra foothills. I'll be taking care of a centuries old house that called to me when I was a kid. It's just temporary, I tell myself. It'll just be for a while.
That is, until I learn what the house really is, something I never could've imagined.
Thankfully forty isn't too old to start an adventure, because that's exactly what I do. A very dangerous adventure that will change my life forever. I have a chance to start again, and this time, I make the rules.

Review:
Magical Midlife Madness is the first book in K.F. Breene's new series staring 40 year old Jessie, a divorced mum whose son has left home for college, who is now ready to start living life on her own terms. Jessie spent the last 18 years caring for her family and putting everyone else's needs above her own so she thinks its about time she had her own adventure. While Jessie is trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life she's taken a job as the caretaker at a mansion in a tiny mountain town. She's expecting a relaxing break from reality but ends up getting a lot more than she bargained for.
So many heroines are in their 20s so it was really nice to come across one who has lived a little, Jessie may not be as fit as she once was and she may have a few insecurities but she's also had a good life and comes with a wealth of experience. It stands her in good stead when she's thrown into the middle of a supernatural community full of people who are used to hiding in plain sight. I loved how confident Jessie is, she knows exactly what she wants and she's willing to work to achieve her goals.
The town is full of fun, quirky characters and there was so much humour in this story. I can't wait to see where things go as Jessie learns more about the community and we start to see how the house magic works. I can already tell this is going to be a brilliant series but that comes as no surprise when it's written by K.F. Breene!

Review:
Charlotte and Dennis Mira have become almost surrogate parents to Eve so it's no wonder she's the first person they call when Dennis is attacked and his cousin is kidnapped. Eve doesn't usually work kidnapping cases but as time goes by with no ransom notice they all become increasingly concerned that things are about to take a darker turn. Edward Mira is a retired judge and former senator, a powerful man with a lot of enemies to choose from and the more digging Eve does the less she likes him. As the bodies start piling up Eve uncovers some dark secrets from Edwards past and starts to wonder if some victims are only getting exactly what they deserve.
I love the Miras so I had a bit of a panic when Dennis was attacked and knocked unconscious, I would have been seriously unhappy if anything worse had happened to him! Luckily all the characters I care about are fine and as far as Edward Mira is concerned he deserves whatever punishment anyone cares to throw in his direction. It's not often I'm rooting for the murderer but this was definitely one of those times. Logically I know taking the law into your own hands isn't a good thing but I find it hard to blame them in these circumstances. I just wish Eve had found them sooner (or not at all!) so that they wouldn't be facing years in prison.
There was a lot of humour in this book as Peabody and Eve discuss the obsession a lot of old, rich men have with young, beautiful women but this story also tore at my heart imagining what the real victims of this situation had suffered. I like that Eve is more able to open up about her own past now too, she's had some great heart to hearts recently with Peabody and here she has one with Dennis too. It's nice to see how close she has become to Charlotte and Dennis and I'm glad the older couple have kind of unofficially adopted both Eve and Roarke. There is a lot in this series about found families and I think that's an important message.
